Microsoft to End Support for Windows Mail and Calendar Apps by Year-End

In a significant move, Microsoft has announced that it will end support for the Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps by December 31st, 2024. This decision is part of the company's broader strategy to transition users to the new Outlook for Windows app, which has been in development for several years and reached general availability in August.

What This Means for Users

After the end of support, users will no longer be able to send and receive emails using the Windows Mail and Calendar apps. Microsoft has been gradually moving users to the new Outlook app, and this transition will now be mandatory. The new Outlook for Windows is designed to eventually replace the full desktop version of Outlook, although existing installs of classic Outlook will continue to be supported until at least 2029.

Why the Change?

The new Outlook for Windows app is a web-based application that offers a more modern and integrated experience. Microsoft aims to provide a seamless transition for users, ensuring that they have access to the latest features and security updates. The company has also promised to give enterprise customers a 12-month notice before starting to phase out the desktop version of Outlook.

Looking Ahead

As Microsoft continues to innovate and streamline its services, users can expect more updates and improvements to the Outlook for Windows app. This change marks the beginning of a new era for Microsoft's email and calendar services, promising a more unified and efficient experience for all users.
